  • CEEWEB Workshop on NGO participation in decision making on tourism development (22–25.10.2007)
Advocacy and campaigning
Dobarsko and Govedartzi, Rila Mountains, Bulgaria

In many locations in Central and Eastern Europe, tourism development has clearly exceeded the carrying capacity and led to dramatic consequences for both, nature and people. However, good examples do exist, which show that tourism may indeed contribute to a harmonised co-existence of man and nature – if implemented in a sustainable manner.

NGOs have a role to play in both, advocating sustainable tourism and preventing those tourism activities that do not meet sustainable development criteria. Looking around in Central and Eastern Europe it becomes evident that NGOs do not tap their full potential in this field. The workshop of the CEEWEB Sustainable Tourism Working Group aimed to strengthen NGOs in their activities.

  • Green Istria development/strategic planning started with a trip (30.06-01.07.2007)
P7015946.JPG The workshop took place in the ex partizan command center (today a tavern of the agrotourism Špinovci close to Motovun) while some weird crowd was quietly celebrating a wedding in the restaurant next door. To relax we were mainly looking towards the Motovun hill, but we also reposesed some guns and a bow from a team building animator crew waiting for some clients from Zagreb...

The work was intense, but thanks to Robert (developing methodology), Irena (with great remarks) and Mirna (the best ngo trainer I ever met) and the Green Istria spirit i can most sertainly declare: THE WAR ON UNSUSTAINABLE ISTRIAN PRACTICES HAS BEGUN! ;))

Leaders of the Creative Commons, free software, open education and access to knowledge communities talk about their vision for the future and discuss strategies for building a free global culture that is rich - both in terms of economic viability and geographic diversity.

With our friends from MI2 we emerged ourselves in the discussions, face2face as well as through second life.

  • Four lectures for the SuperSizeEurope project (19.04.2007)
photoAs University of Pula is a member of the SuperSizeEurope project I was invited to give four lectures (2 in Rijeka and 2 in Pula) on "Economic and land properties". Therefore I prepared a lecture (with presentation) on "Public participation in environmental impact assessment". The students were quite skeptical on any possibility for a positive change of Croatian economical, social and political policies, but wanted to discuss EU enlargement issues with an "objective" expert. If they only knew the truth wink

Richard Stallman came with our friends from mi2.hr for, what we expected, a tour of the 3.000 years old city, Monteparadiso Hacklab etc. But self proclaimed "Saint Ignucius of the Church of Emacs" wasn't too interested in people or historical, social or other contexts of his wherabouts - he asked no questions, requested not to have more than three people at table, ignored the sunny weather after the bora wind... He came to Croatia to offer two lectures on patents and free software issues in Zagreb, but we'll much rather stay in Pula: tomorrow it's Hacklab's birthday party and on friday we'll party with 270beat - squattish partymakers' benefit gig...

If you'd like to see all the photos, ask me to send you a flickr invitation on your e-mail. Some pictures are for friends/family eyes only wink
